Searching as Exploration

Good Afternoon All,

Today we are focusing on the last frame in the ACRL Framework. We are looking at Searching as Exploration.

Topic: The effects of parental incarceration of young children.

Learning Outcomes:

  •        Students will be able to identify that information can be produced by interested parties such as scholars, organizations etc.

  •       Students will be able to understand that there are a variety of sources of information that varies greatly in content and format, and have vary relevancy and value depending on the search.

  •        Students will be able to use different types of searching methods when seeking information.

Activity.

  •      Each student will have to conduct research by finding information on their topic and find out which organization or individuals have disseminated information on that, such as institutional repositories, government publication, organizational websites and so forth.

  •            Students will have to seek out 5 reputable sources based on their topic such as journal articles, printed books, e-books, newspapers and so forth. This will allow students to see that information can be anywhere.

  •            Students will have to show what strategies they would use to refine their search in order to retrieve information. They would have to list at least two strategies that they would use to obtain information such as keywords, Boolean search etc.

The students will incorporate both knowledge practices and dispositions by doing the activities. Activity 1 and 2 comes from Knowledge practices and activity 3 is formulated by the dispositions of this frame.

Activity

So for this activity, we have to do answer two questions. The topic of this activity is the effects of parental incarceration on young children.

Question 1

Who would be interested in information about the effects of parental incarceration on young children?

  • Parents and Foster parents - Parents would be interested in this information because they would want to know how to handle the situation/ child better. Foster parents would also be interested to know what they should be aware in cases like this.
  • Social Workers need to be aware of what the effects are for children, due to it being a sensitive case. They need to prepare themselves as children differ.
  • Educators are there to educate learners about topics such as these and they also need to know what to do with learners that are facing difficulty during this time. They need to be able to be considerate and passionate with students.
  • Scholars/ Researchers would want to conduct research based on this topic and find ways to improve the situations, to help inform others that are facing the same problem.
  • Counselors need information on this to help children overcome this situation in their lives and to focus on the positive stuff. The counselor can also assists the parents to want to change their lifestyle in order to help get their children pass this stage in their lives.

Question 2

How  and where would the groups that you identified disseminate the information that they produced on the topic? (5) eg. websites, government publications

Parents would disseminate their information on social media platforms such as Facebook and Blogs.

Social workers would publish their articles within government publications, in order for others to see what research has been done on this topic and finding ways to contribute to it.

Educators could encourage newspapers to write on this topic so that the community can be known about this and how it can be improved.

Scholars/ researchers will disseminate their information at institutional repositories  or peer-reviewed articles.

Counselors would publish their information also within their organization or can publish it on their website if they have an organizational website.

Information Creation as a Process.

Good Afternoon All,

Welcome to my blog, today we will be  focusing on information creation as a process.

What is Information creation as a process?

Information Creation as a ProcessInformation in any format is produced to convey a message and is shared via a selected delivery method. The iterative processes of researching, creating, revising, and disseminating information vary, and the resulting product reflects these differences process

We were asked to get 5 sources on the research topic that was given to us and with the five sources, we are to recreate a minimum of three sources which will be included for all to view.

Below is the five sources that were found on Breast Cancer in South Africa.

Format

The reason for choosing these formats is, because it relates to my research topic and it is credible sources. It is used for academic purposes as provide information for people to use. These platforms are made available for people to get information and to be heard. Breast Cancer is a disease that most women undergo and some people need to find ways to help others that are in need and by doing this, they are sharing their stories.

Recreation of information:

1) Academic Journal into a Blogger post.

I will be converting the Academic Journal Article,http://journals.co.za/- Journal Article into a blog post. https://www.blogger.com/blogger.

The reason for choosing this platform is because,  I would like people to know more about breast cancer. By using this platform people would be able to communicate with each other and conversations would be taking place.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer profiles of women presenting with newly diagnosed breast cancer at Universitas Hospital (Bloemfontein, South Africa)

Breast cancer is arguably the most-researched cancer in the world. Environmental factors, including diet and lifestyle, have been widely investigated, but these variables have not been able to explain international or ethnic variability in breast cancer.

Breast cancer is most common among whites and Asian and is the second most common in Africans and colored.  In South Africa an alarming increase in the incidence of breast cancer among young black women, a group that was previously considered to have the lowest breast cancer risk, is reported.3 There are several possible reasons why increasingly more young women appear to be contracting breast cancer

Matatiele & Van den Heever.  (2008)  stated that women with different racial or ethnic backgrounds have different breast cancer risks, due to environmental and genetic factors.4 In South Africa breast cancer is most prevalent amongst Asian (24.4%) and white (17.9%) women.3 In our study we also found that more white (46%) than black (41%) and coloured (13%) women had breast cancer. Our study group consisted largely (63%) of postmenopausal, older women. However, a small portion of our study group consisted of young (≤ 39 yrs) breast cancer sufferers, the majority (4 of 5) of whom were black women. It has always been thought that the low incidence of breast cancer among black African women is due to the fact that they usually have their first child at an early age and are multiparous.

Even though reproduction has a complex effect on breast cancer, the emphasis has always been on the positive effects; however, our results showed that 92% of the women had at least more than one full-term pregnancy with an average of three children each. Similar studies also report that even though multiple pregnancies and young age at first full-term pregnancy are very common in the developing world, early onset breast cancer is also unexpectedly highly prevalent.1 Moreover, American studies have also shown that early onset breast cancer is more common among African-American women than among white women and, more importantly, that multiparity increases the risk of breast cancer in these women.
