Searching as Exploration


Good Afternoon All, 

Today we are focusing on the last frame in the ACRL Framework. We are looking at Searching as Exploration. 

Topic: The effects of parental incarceration of young children.









Learning Outcomes:

  •        Students will be able to identify that information can be produced by interested parties such as scholars, organizations etc.


  •       Students will be able to understand that there are a variety of sources of information that varies greatly in content and format, and have vary relevancy and value depending on the search.


  •        Students will be able to use different types of searching methods when seeking information.




Activity. 


  •      Each student will have to conduct research by finding information on their topic and find out which organization or individuals have disseminated information on that, such as institutional repositories, government publication, organizational websites and so forth.


  •            Students will have to seek out 5 reputable sources based on their topic such as journal articles, printed books, e-books, newspapers and so forth. This will allow students to see that information can be anywhere.  


  •            Students will have to show what strategies they would use to refine their search in order to retrieve information. They would have to list at least two strategies that they would use to obtain information such as keywords, Boolean search etc.

 The students will incorporate both knowledge practices and dispositions by doing the activities. Activity 1 and 2 comes from Knowledge practices and activity 3 is formulated by the dispositions of this frame.

Activity






So for this activity, we have to do answer two questions. The topic of this activity is the effects of parental incarceration on young children.










Question 1

Who would be interested in information about the effects of parental incarceration on young children?




  • Parents and Foster parents - Parents would be interested in this information because they would want to know how to handle the situation/ child better. Foster parents would also be interested to know what they should be aware in cases like this. 
  • Social Workers need to be aware of what the effects are for children, due to it being a sensitive case. They need to prepare themselves as children differ. 
  • Educators are there to educate learners about topics such as these and they also need to know what to do with learners that are facing difficulty during this time. They need to be able to be considerate and passionate with students. 
  • Scholars/ Researchers would want to conduct research based on this topic and find ways to improve the situations, to help inform others that are facing the same problem. 
  • Counselors need information on this to help children overcome this situation in their lives and to focus on the positive stuff. The counselor can also assists the parents to want to change their lifestyle in order to help get their children pass this stage in their lives. 



Question 2


How  and where would the groups that you identified disseminate the information that they produced on the topic? (5) eg. websites, government publications 


Parents would disseminate their information on social media platforms such as Facebook and Blogs. 

Social workers would publish their articles within government publications, in order for others to see what research has been done on this topic and finding ways to contribute to it.

Educators could encourage newspapers to write on this topic so that the community can be known about this and how it can be improved. 

Scholars/ researchers will disseminate their information at institutional repositories  or peer-reviewed articles. 

Counselors would publish their information also within their organization or can publish it on their website if they have an organizational website.
